Watching live sport online: tips for match day

Updated 2026-10-31 · 1 min read

Live sport is the hardest test for any stream. Many people use the same services at the same time, and a few seconds of trouble can cost a goal.

Before the match

  1. Restart the app and the TV a little before kick-off.
  2. Test the channel ten minutes early, not at the whistle.
  3. Close other apps and pause large downloads.
  4. Use a cable to the TV, or sit within strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi range.

Speed for sport

HD sport can use up to about 25 Mbps for one TV. Because the home connection is shared, 50 Mbps or more is good.

If the stream freezes

Switch to another version of the same channel if one exists, then close and reopen the app. Check that nobody started a large download.

Delay in live streams

Streaming has a delay compared with the stadium, often a little longer than cable. If you follow a score on your phone, you may see a goal in an alert before it happens on the TV. Turn off alerts during the match to avoid spoilers.

FAQ

Does 4K make live sport better?

It can look sharper, but it needs about 30 Mbps for that TV. Use HD if your connection is limited.

Which device is best for sport?

Any device with enough memory and a stable connection. A cable gives the steadiest result.
